Teddy Tian

Hometown/Lionbridge Office:

Jinan, China

Job Title:

Business Unit Manager, Global Localization and Translation

How long have you been at Lionbridge?

4 years

What does a typical work day look like for you?

When I go to the office in the morning, I start by looking at the arrangement on my calendar and prioritizing the things that should be done in the day. Then I start to check and reply to emails. Meetings happen across the day; in the mornings, I meet with American and Asian colleagues or customers, and in the afternoon, I have a lot of discussions with European colleagues. Besides meetings, another important job of mine is training and coaching my team members. Through training and coaching, I want to help them expand their mindsets and find the best practices in their work. No matter how busy the day is, I always make time to think about what the most important things are and reserve my time to do them first.

What is your favorite place in your office?

We have a park outside our office building, which is a good place to relax after lunch and feed the pigeons.

What is the best part of your job?

There are a lot of unknown areas in my job, so I always need to explore and discover. The best part is starting something from a new idea, then making it happen. Of course, we fail a lot in the work. We believe: “Fail fast, fail cheap, then we succeed.”

Fill in the blanks:

I speak 2 languages (list them!)

Chinese and English

My favorite local saying is ______, [and it means ______, if not English].

My favorite local saying is “不患无位,患所以立;不患莫己知,求为可知也。”

It was said by Confucius and it means, “don’t worry about there is no your position, you should worry how to match for the position; don’t worry that others don’t know you, you should worry about whether you are worthy to be known.” (I think it is very similar to Stephen R. Covey’s concept of “Circle of Concern” and “Circle of Influence.” Eastern and Western thoughts have a lot in common; it is interesting.)

A tourist visiting my city shouldn’t miss…

I strongly recommend Daming Lake. Jinan is famous for its springs, and Daming Lake is formed by numerous springs in the city. It has beautiful scenes and a history of beautiful legends.

My coworkers would say my weirdest habit is…

I care very much about the format of documents (spreadsheets, slides, etc.). I like to make the font sizes strictly consistent, the options strictly aligned, and ensure there is no border missing, etc. I like documents to be “nice-looking” and ask my team members to do the same. I believe “nice-looking” documents delight everyone in the workplace and help improve efficiency, so it is worth it to spend time polishing them.

Outside of work, I always make time for…

I spend a lot of time learning about different domains, like economics, biology, psychology, physics, philosophy, etc. While knowledge in these areas is not directly relevant to my work, it gives me different perspectives and mindsets to understand the world and help me make decisions in life and work.

My hidden talent is…

I think I have good taste in movies. I am an amateur film critic, and my dream is to be a director.

Realizing new ideas makes me roar.
